William Hawrelak Park, located in Edmonton, Alberta, is a large 350-acre riverside park situated in the city's river valley along the North Saskatchewan River. Originally known as Mayfair Park, it was developed starting in 1959 with man-made lakes and opened officially in 1967. The park offers many recreational facilities including walking trails, picnic sites, playgrounds, paddleboat rentals, and a large outdoor amphitheatre called the Heritage Amphitheatre which hosts concerts and festivals.
The upgrade project aimed at renewing underground utilities, infrastructure, and park facilities while preserving heritage buildings. The renovation includes new playgrounds, reshaped lakes, improved accessibility such as ramps and accessible picnic areas, and updates to the amphitheatre and pavilions. This upgrade ensures the park remains a safe, sustainable, and attractive venue for community events in the future.
William Hawrelak Park is known as a cultural and social hub in Edmonton's river valley, hosting major events like the Edmonton Heritage Festival and the Freewill Shakespeare Festival. While the park is under renovation and temporarily closed, many of these festivals have been relocated to other venues in the city. The park will reopen in early 2026, ready to continue serving as a beautiful gathering place for residents and visitors alike.
